As Uber, Facebook, and Huawei have found in recent months, companies do not exist in a political vacuum. Changes in the legal, regulatory, economic, and geopolitical environment can affect even the most technically brilliant startups, and throw huge obstacles into their growth paths. In this workshop, we’ll talk about the world of political risk, how it can be analyzed, and how firms can take steps to mitigate threats and take advantage of opportunities.

Chris Oates, PhD, is the founder and CEO of Two Lanterns Advisory. He previously worked at Oxford Analytica, covering North America, Australia, New Zealand, and NATO, and, leading projects for the Department of Defense, European Parliament, and others. He has also worked in business intelligence, government consulting in Iraqi Kurdistan, and on political campaigns in Massachusetts. He is also the founder of Legislata, a SaaS product for elected officials.
Chris is a Lecturer at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. Chris has a PhD in International Relations from the University of Oxford and a BA with Honors and Magna Cum Laude from Brown University.
Justin Vela is a Helsinki-based geopolitical risk consultant and business trends researcher. He works with social listening tools, a network of subject matter experts, and open source intelligence practices to construct customized knowledge products.
He previously worked as a journalist in Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and the Gulf, and as a member of the consultancy team at Oxford Analytica. He has a BA from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, USA.
